Lucky Nelson

Nelson is a lovely 4 year old Jack Russell Terrier who decided to go for a walk on the main road in Hathersage early one morning last week and unfortunately had a run in with a car. Luckily for Nelson, the driver was local and was sticking to the 30mph speed limit but despite this Nelson withstood some serious injuries.
When Nelson presented to us he was very stressed and in severe shock. Nelson had a displaced, open tibial dislocation and fracture of his right hind leg which means the bone was not only dislocated but also broken and the break was exposed through a large skin wound too.
Nelson had sadly lost all blood supply and nerve supply to his lower right hind leg which meant that unfortunately we were unable to save his leg and it was amputated the next day when Nelson was medically more stable. Luckily Nelson only had superficial injuries to his left hind leg and no other clinical concerns once recovered from the traumatic accident.
Nelson was very brave during his stay with us and made a brilliant recovery following his amputation and was able to go home after 2 nights with us at the hospital.
Nelson’s tail never stopped wagging the whole time and his family were very happy to have him back at home – in one piece or just about.
